GILDING, GLAZING, STENCILS & MORE.

There is a wide variety of decorative painting techniques to achieve a LUXE aesthetic in a space. Gilding, glazing and stenciling are some of the techniques and finishes used to create sophisticated interior effects.

Gilding provides a unique beauty and richness to any surface as it gives the appearance of solid gold, silver, copper or whatever metal leaf is used. The metal leaf can be imitation or genuine/authentic.

Mediums, better known as Glazes, are used to create traditional faux finishes and decorative wall effects. Glazes are translucent coatings that add texture and dimension to any surface by using two or more different tints, shades or tones.

Decorative Stencil finishes are a great alternative to wallpaper and a top quality is its seamless appearance. Stencils are a great way to bring character into a space by introducing any kind of pattern with as many different hues as the client desires.

THE PROCESS OF GILDING

The art of gilding has been around for many centuries, dating as far back as the 23rd century BC. The process of gilding requires expertise, delicacy and precision as the metal sheets are very thin and extreme care is needed to handle them.

A proven process for gilded installations is very important to achieve the highest quality craftsmanship.

1) Preparation

Any decorative installation is only as strong as its weakest link. That is why surface preparation is the most important factor when it comes to our installations and it cannot be overemphasized. . The surface to be gilded must be finely sanded and in perfect conditions. Primer is essential to ensure a uniform color as the base and for proper bonding for the size (adhesive) layer.

2) Size Application

The "size" (adhesive) application is very important as the surface has to be thoroughly cleaned to avoid contaminants and the "size" coat has to be applied evenly as any imperfection in the adhesive layer will telegraph through the metal leaf application. Once the "size" has reached the ideal "tack" it is ready for the leaf application.

3) Leaf Application

The leaf sheets come in a couple of variations, loose form or patented form which has an attached wax paper for a more precise transfer. Rolls are also available for larger surfaces.

4) Removing Overlap

Once the surface has been fully covered, the excess (overlap) material needs to be removed using a super soft brush. A micro-fiber cloth is used before the sealing process to ensure any loose leaf is removed.

5) Sealer

In order to preserve the beauty of a gilded surface a clear sealer is applied. For certain metals, the sealer will protect it from tarnishing and others it serves just as a protective layer, such as genuine gold leaf.
